Why It Matters
Black & white strips away everything — leaving only what’s true.
Color is beautiful — but sometimes it distracts. When you remove it, something remarkable happens: the emotion, the light, the expression, the person — they all become impossible to ignore. Black and white photography has a timeless, almost painterly quality that color simply can’t replicate.
These portraits are meant to last a lifetime. Framed on your wall, gifted to someone you love, or kept as a reminder of who you are right now — they carry a weight and elegance that color images rarely achieve.
Whether you’re looking for a solo portrait, a couples session, or a creative artistic shoot, I’ll work with you to create images that feel cinematic, emotional, and completely you. Learn more about portrait photography in Chicago or browse the Rife Ponce blog for inspiration.

FAQ
Common questions, answered.
Still have questions? Reach out directly — I’m happy to chat before you book.
Do you shoot in black and white in-camera, or convert later?
I shoot in color and convert to black and white in post-processing. This gives me far more control over the tones, contrast, and final look than in-camera black and white, resulting in richer, more nuanced images.
What should I wear for a black and white portrait session?
Since color won’t be a factor, focus on texture and tone. Solid colors with interesting fabric textures — linen, knit, velvet — photograph beautifully. Avoid very busy patterns. Whites and creams glow; blacks add drama. I’ll send a full prep guide before your session.
Can I get both color and black and white versions of my images?
Absolutely. Many clients love having both. We can discuss during your session which images you’d like delivered in both formats. I’ll help you decide which moments work best in each.
Where do you shoot black and white portrait sessions?
Anywhere the light is beautiful. I love Chicago’s architecture, industrial spaces, and window-lit interiors. I can also bring studio lighting to your home or office, or we can scout a location together that fits the mood you’re going for.
How soon will I receive my images?
You’ll receive your full proof gallery within 72 hours. After you select your favorites, retouched finals are delivered within 1–2 weeks depending on the package.
Do you offer prints?
Yes — and I highly recommend them for black and white portraits. A fine art print on the right paper makes an enormous difference. I can help you choose sizes and finishes that will look stunning in your space. Ask me about print options.
